On December 19, 2019, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation (S.B. 3945) adding the Create a Respectful and Open Workspace for Natural Hair Act (CROWN Act) to the state’s Law Against Discrimination. Under the act, race is clarified as being inclusive of traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture, hair type, and protective hairstyles. The act further defines protective hair styles as including braids, locks, and twists. Subsequently, discrimination on the basis of hair, particularly hair texture and style, is prohibited.
The law took effect on December 19, 2019.
